Amphetamine Abuse Could Lead to Aortic Dissection in Young Adults

A new study discovered that young adults who use amphetamines such as cocaine may be at a higher risk of experiencing a tear in the main artery leading from the heart, or aortic dissection. The study, by researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center, found that amphetamine abuse was associated with a three-fold increase in the risk of aortic dissection. The researchers studied medical records from about 31 million people between 18 and 49 years old who were hospitalized between 1995 and 2007.
